Topchanchi: A Top Tourist Attraction in Jharkhand

Situated at a distance of 37 kms from Dhanbad, Topchanchi is a census town in Indian state of Jharkhand. It’s about 109 kms from Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand. The place is famous for the Topchanchi lake which attracts people from the state as well as the adjoining areas. At Topchanchi a dam has been created by Jharia water Board at Rajdhato to form a reservoir for supplying water in Dhanbad and its suburbs. Actually the dam was created along the slope of the Parasnath Hill in 1915, to supply water in Jharia region. Topchanchi is located at 23.9°N 86.2°E with an average elevation of 304 metres (997 feet).

Apart from the scenic lake, the place is also famous for Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary which has an area of 8.75 Sq. Km. The nature lovers can enjoy the greeneries of the forest here which are dry Mixed Deciduous in type. Dry Peninsular Sal in Baneshpur and Bawardaha is the most abundant type of tree here, apart from the other tree species, like Asan, Bijasal, Dhow, Semal, Kendu, Piar, Karam, Siris, Sidha etc. The grassland and bamboos are also plentiful in this sanctuary.

Besides the magnificent lake being a top spot to watch migratory birds, the sanctuary boasts of wildlives like, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Cheetal, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Mongoose, Langur, Jackal, Fox, Wild Dog etc.
